Who is Hannah Kent?Hannah Kent is an Australian author (hence why we're studying this book) and Burial Rites is her first novel.
Kent was on Rotary exchange in Iceland when she learnt about the story of Agnes Magnusdottir, the last woman to be executed in the country. To get over the intense homesickness and isolation she felt while in the small fishing village of Saudarkrokur, she turned to writing, and was intrigued by Agnes' story. In her own notes in the back of the book, Kent points out that her novel "is informed by many years of research" and that while it contains some elements of fiction, "most members of the family at Kornsa, and Agnes' parents and siblings, are taken from historical records." (p 333-334) As you would be able to tell from reading the text, Kent is a wonderful storyteller.
