Here's the work for today's class. Sorry I can't be there but you should work through these instructions to gather quotes and explanations that will help you when writing text responses. Check out this pdf file of quotes divided into the sections of 'This Boy's Life' by Tobias Wolff.
First...divide all of the quotes into the following groups (you could make a table).
Identity Masculinity Maturity Dreams Being an outsider Next...identify the 10 quotes that you feel are the most important. Finally...answer the following questions in full sentences. •Why are dreams important? •Why is Wolff always disappointed when his dreams are realised? •How do we construct our sense of self? •Can we ever be the person that we imagine ourselves as? •What makes a person mature? •Is everyone capable of maturity? •What are masculine traits? •Do different groups of people have different expectations of manliness? •How are people marginalised within society? Is being an outsider always a choice? Is it ever a choice?

Hi guys,
Sorry I can't be there today. Could you please continue with the chapter summaries that we have been doing. I don't have the book with me at home, so you will need to work out the page numbers for yourselves. Please split the sections amongst yourselves working in pairs or threes as required. (There's usually a blank section and a new page started at the end of the section). Fill in the form on the chapter summary page of the weebly as per usual. When you have completed this, please share with the whole class. You can then move onto the chapter questions on the "outcome 1" page. Please make sure you complete this, as we will move on to chapter 4 on Friday. Homework: Read chapter 4 and catch up with any incomplete chapter questions. If you have any q's, please email me. The Victorian Association for the Teaching of English (VATE) are holding a one day session on Saturday 11 October 2014 at Monash University to help students revise for the English exam.
VATE run a variety of professional development sessions for teachers and always have high quality presenters - I assume these sessions will be of the same quality. Click here for more info. |
